Now that our nation has, for the moment, averted the fiscal cliff crisis, it is time to get back to business. And by business, I mean passing a comprehensive immigration reform.

The topic of comprehensive immigration reform was in newspaper headlines during the 2012 presidential election, but since has been neglected. Republicans now realize something must be done on immigration reform. And Democrats have advocated immigration reform for years.

Anti-immigrant laws and policies only harm businesses and the economy; just ask Alabama and Arizona. Sometimes politicians and law enforcement officers fail to recognize that immigrants are human beings and should be treated as such.

Because of a need for people to harvest crops and do work which most Americans do not want to do at a very low wage, Hispanics have crossed our borders to take up these jobs. They pay taxes, and their employers want their services. We created the problem of over 12 million illegal immigrants in our country, and now is the time to fix this situation.

We are a nation of immigrants, and the continued flow of immigrants to our country is essential to our future economic growth.

We need a path for the 12 million illegal immigrants so hey can obtain U.S. citizenship.

It is time for Washington and the media o focus on comprehensive immigration reform.
