Protest for More Perfect Union

Posted on November 15, 2016

Along with majority of others, I did not vote for Donald Trump, but I accept that he will become the 45th president.

The reason for my writing this blog is that I am concerned about many fellow Americans who want me to “get over it,” by unifying with them in supporting Trump. Some even suggest that peaceful protests are un-American.

This country was built on protest. As someone who has demonstrated publicly but peacefully over the years regarding issues of social justice, I will not relinquish that right to protest because it makes others uncomfortable.

If Trump wants my support and trust, he will have to earn it. That will happen by starting with an acknowledgement of bad behavior on his part.

It does not seem he is going in that direction. Trump’s appointment of Steve Bannon as chief strategist is a big mistake. Bannon’s website is rife with bigoted, anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim, racist, white nationalist and just plain creepy content.

For my fellow citizens who are uncomfortable with dissent, I recommend that you find a “reality” TV show.

For the rest of us, we will continue our work to forge a more perfect union.
