Fear Not Good in Politics

“Fear is not a good advisor in politics.” said Chancellor Angela Merkel at the Security Conference of Western leaders in Munich Germany. Among those attending were President Trump’s national security officials and Vice President Mike Pence.

Chancellor Merkel made the point that countries driven by fear will not control their future. “Both the European Union and the United States are now in the midst of changing their policies on terrorism, migration and trade as in response to rapid changes in these areas as to rise of populist candidates and parties.” she added.

Merkel’s advice in Munich was that the West must deal with such problems with the same principles, trust and cooperation that have guided Western democracies for more than seven decades and not fear.

Perhaps the Chancellor’s message will keep 2017 from being so uncertain.
