Need Independent Investigation

Posted on April 3, 2017

There is a need for an independent investigation of Russia’s connection to President Donald Trump’s associates and the 2016 election.

The FBI criminal investigation into the matter is conducted by a bipartisan agency. FBI Director James Comey’s testimony recently confirmed a criminal investigation into connections between  Trump’s close associates and Russian operatives during the presidential election.

Although I would think the publicly known connections would be alarming enough of a threat to our democracy to motivate GOP legislators to rally behind the FBI’s investigation, instead they tried to distract and divert by focusing their questions on having the FBI investigate leaks to the media.

Trump and his aides are attempting to throw focus off Russia’s threat. They want an investigation of the possibility of illegal leaks of classified information and whether or not his associates were caught up in incidental collection by surveillance that was targeting foreigners.

Also, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes destroyed the House’s bipartisan investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election by meeting  and receiving documents from White House officials, and by being a member of Trump’s campaign.

I condemn all attempts, from either party, to divert inquiry into the grave threat of Kremlin ties to Trump’s team. The FBI investigation should be supported in all ways possible, including the condemnation of those who seek to make its work illegal and divert it from its mission.

This investigation will go on for months.

Also, an independent committee should conduct an  investigation.
