Rich Divides America

It is sad the only time American citizens have been so divided was prior to the Civil War. Are we really approaching that level of separation?

A divided America prior to 1860 took us to the Civil War. Four years into the war our president gave an address at Gettysburg that for me defines the American experience.

To commemorate a Soldier’s National Cemetery and the death of thousands of soldiers, President Lincoln explained why they died. In his words,”that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people for the people shall not perish from the earth.”

Lincoln’s goal was the preservation of the Union. How far have we slipped from that goal? It was not his choice to resolve differences by military means. War was a decision thrust on him.

Today we live in a new Gilded Age where the very rich own our government. The rich have been upset over paying for the Affordable Health Care Act. Billionaires have been in the media expressing outrage that the Republican Party failed to kill the Affordable Health Care Act (Obama Care) and allow them to keep their money.

Now billionaires demand action on a tax bill that will relieve them from more public responsibility in America.

It has always been known that a Trump administration tax bill would be a tax give away in which the top 1 percent get the benefit. Most of other gains will be for those making over $150,000 a year.

The bottom 80 percent of us citizens will be losers over the next 10 years. Such a tax bill will increase our national deficit.

All we need to do is fix the Affordable Health Care Act by reducing the health insurance yearly increases and a few other changes. Our tax laws need to be simplified.
